Voices of Our Sisters, Inc. is committed to providing culturally responsible and healing centered resources, services, and supports to individuals, families and communities who are impacted by systemic oppression, disparities, poverty, and incarceration.
One way we fulfill this mission is through our work to support Veterans and their families who are experiencing homelessness in our
House of Grace program in East Orange and Newark, New Jersey.
Homelessness among Veterans is a significant problem in the United States. While there is no official count of unsheltered Veterans, we know the need is great based on the published statistics by NYC DHS and by the VA’s reports, publishing in January of 2019 that there were 37,085 unsheltered veterans that year. Female Veterans, one of the fastest-growing groups in the homeless population, are four times more likely to become homeless than their male peers.
Currently, at the House of Grace, we provide life altering transitional housing, support services, and permanent housing connections for 30 Veteran adults and dependent children at a time. Our goal is to bridge the gap to wellness, housing stability, and economic success for Veterans as they work to build lives beyond military service. By including the unique voices and experiences of each Veteran, our team provides housing services centered on principles of housing first and sets the stage for them to meet critical needs and begin to thrive. We are proud of our core value to provide services that are holistic, healing centered, and culturally, affirming, relevant, and responsible. In addition to transitional housing, we deliver healing centered service coordination and support that includes case management, service coordination, job readiness, life skills workshops, financial literacy, and wellness and health sessions. Through House of Grace, we help Veterans to navigate the many systems connected to poverty, incarceration, and homelessness, and to create pathways to stability, security, support, hope, and better futures.
